IMU support – TCI Option
(TCI = Tightly Coupled Inertial)
The Tightly Coupled Inertial (TCI) option is based on NovAtel SPAN technology and enables extremely robust and high-performance GNSS + IMU positioning and attitude (roll, pitch, and azimuth) data.
Unlike standard “Loosely Coupled” GNSS + IMU systems, “Tightly Coupled” GNSS + IMU systems do not just combine autonomously calculated GNSS and IMU solutions. With our TCI systems, all components work together on a completely different level. Thus, e.g. the IMU based speed and direction information is used to improve and accelerate satellite tracking of the GPS receiver in difficult environments or after total satelllite blockages. Likewise, e.g. the so-called ‘Delta Phases’ of the GNSS receiver, which are already available when receiving only 2 or 3 satellites, can be used to compensate the drift of the IMU.
Because of this TCI technology, it is possible to achieve an outstanding performance level with comparatively inexpensive IMUs, where “Loosely Coupled” GNSS + IMU systems could only achieve very poor results.

Our TCI option supports both the optional EPSON G320N or G370N IMU integrated into the 40xx sensor, as well as the use of externally connected IMUs (e.g., LITEF μIMU, ISA-100C).
